Oxford in Pictures: Town Vs. Gown Boxing Tournament

3rd March 2016

The rivalry, competition and sometimes even downright hostility between the townspeople of Oxford and the students of Oxford University has been going on since the college was founded. And in the past the ‘town vs. gown’ scenario has even resulted in some rather nasty – and deadly – violence.

These days however the rivalry manifests itself in friendlier, but still very competitive ways. An great is example is the annual ‘Town vs.Gown Boxing’ Event. Held every February, the event pits amateur boxers from both college clubs and ‘civilian’ clubs in Oxford and these days, across the Midlands and the North of England – both male and female too – against one another in what is always a fun, hard fought, loud and occasionally raucous, but still ultimately very friendly evening that carries on a centuries old tradition in a rather civilized way.

As sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, we decided to share some extraordinary ones from the most recent contest, held at the Oxford Union,  with you as the best possible way to describe the event.
